Preserving the Legacy

Throughout history, generations have fought tirelessly to advance social and political change. From civil rights and labor movements to voting rights and environmental protections, the struggles and victories of the past have shaped the society we live in today. However, these hard-earned gains are not guaranteed to last without continued vigilance and advocacy. Preserving the legacy of past generations requires both an understanding of history and a commitment to defending and building upon their achievements.

Defending Against Regression

Despite the progress made, history has shown that rights and protections can be rolled back. Threats to voting rights, labor protections, and civil liberties continue to emerge, often under the guise of policy reforms or political shifts. Safeguarding the achievements of the past requires active participation in the democratic process—whether through voting, advocacy, or grassroots organizing. By staying informed and engaged, citizens can push back against efforts to undermine these gains.

Building Upon Past Successes

Progress is not static; it is an ongoing process. While past generations laid the foundation, it is up to us to build upon it. This means addressing contemporary challenges such as economic inequality, climate change, and social justice reform. Modern movements, including those advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, environmental justice, and worker protections, are the next chapters in this ongoing struggle. By supporting these causes, we honor the legacy of those who came before us and continue their mission.

Protect and advance

The work of past generations has shaped the world we live in today, but it is up to us to protect and advance their achievements. By educating ourselves, staying politically active, supporting social movements, and fostering intergenerational collaboration, we can safeguard the progress made and continue striving for a just and equitable society. In doing so, we honor the sacrifices of those who fought before us and secure a better future for generations to come.

Losses Mount

The loss of body autonomy is one of the greatest setbacks of our generation—a fundamental right stripped away with lasting consequences.

The loss of Roe v. Wade in 2022

A significant shift in U.S. reproductive rights. With the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the federal protection for abortion access was overturned, returning the power to regulate abortion laws to individual states. As a result, many states enacted restrictive abortion bans, while others reaffirmed access. The decision sparked widespread debate over bodily autonomy, healthcare rights, and government intervention in personal decisions. It also raised concerns about the potential rollback of other rights previously protected under privacy and liberty precedents.
How did this happen? Most say it was only possible because of Trump appointed Judges lied to the American people. Breaking the trust in one of the highest democratic institutions in the country.
The three Supreme Court justices appointed by Donald Trump who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision were:
  • Brett Kavanaugh (appointed in 2018) Congressional hearing September 4–7, 2018 and September 27, 2018
  • Amy Coney Barrett (appointed in 2020)Congressional hearing October 12–15, 2020
  • A third Trump-appointed justice, Neil Gorsuch (appointed in 2017) Congressional hearing March 20 to March 23, 2017., also voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, making all three of Trump’s nominees part of the majority decision.

What They Told The American Public About Roe v. Wade To Gain Their Trust:
  • Neil Gorsuch (2017) Called Roe v. Wade "a precedent of the U.S. Supreme Court" that had been reaffirmed by Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992). Stated: "A good judge will consider it as precedent of the U.S. Supreme Court worthy of treatment as precedent like any other."
  • Brett Kavanaugh (2018) Referred to Roe as "settled law" that had been reaffirmed in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. When pressed, he avoided directly stating whether he would vote to overturn it.
  • Amy Coney Barrett (2020) Declined to call Roe v. Wade a "super precedent", which refers to cases so widely accepted that they are unlikely to be overturned. Stated: "Roe is not a super precedent because calls for its overruling have never ceased."

What Happened Later? Despite these statements, all three justices joined the majority opinion in *Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022), which overturned Roe v. Wade and ended federal protections for abortion rights.

"Ill-gotten gains do not prosper."

Since these justices have shown they have no problem lying to the American people and betraying our trust, it’s time to set term limits for Supreme Court justices. Accountability and integrity must be restored to the highest court in the land.

With each election we lose more of our democracy

Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010) was a landmark Supreme Court decision that removed limits on independent political spending by corporations and unions.

Key Points of the Ruling:
  • The Court ruled that corporations, nonprofits, and labor unions have First Amendment rights to spend unlimited money on political campaigns—as long as the spending is independent and not directly coordinated with candidates.
  • It overturned previous campaign finance restrictions, arguing that money equals speech and that limiting political spending violates free speech rights.
  • This decision led to the rise of "Super PACs", which can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money to influence elections.
Impact:
  • Opened the door for massive corporate and dark money influence in U.S. elections.
  • Increased political advertising and spending, with billionaires and special interests gaining more sway over candidates and policies.
  • Critics argue it gives the wealthy disproportionate power in elections, while supporters claim it protects free speech.
Efforts to overturn or limit Citizens United v. FEC have been ongoing since the ruling in 2010. Here are the main ways people have tried to challenge it:
1. Constitutional Amendment
  • Some lawmakers and advocacy groups have pushed for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and clarify that money is not speech and corporations are not people under the First Amendment.
  • Multiple amendment proposals have been introduced in Congress, but none have gained enough support to pass.
  • The Democracy for All Amendment, first introduced in 2013, has been reintroduced several times but has yet to advance.
2. Legislation to Rein in Dark Money
  • The DISCLOSE Act – This bill aims to increase transparency by requiring political organizations and Super PACs to disclose their major donors. It has been introduced multiple times but has not passed.
  • Public Financing of Elections – Some proposals, such as the For the People Act, have included provisions to create publicly funded elections, reducing candidates’ reliance on big donors.
  • The Honest Ads Act – Aimed at increasing transparency in online political ads, this bill would require digital platforms to disclose funding sources for political advertisements.
  • The Freedom to Vote Act – Contains measures to address dark money by requiring additional disclosure from Super PACs and other political organizations.
3. State-Level Reforms
  • Several states and cities have passed laws to increase campaign finance transparency, limit corporate donations in state elections, or establish public campaign financing systems.
  • States like Montana and Colorado passed measures opposing Citizens United and calling for an amendment to overturn it.
  • New York and Maine have implemented strong public financing programs to reduce the influence of big money in elections.
4. Supreme Court Reversal
  • If the Supreme Court were to reconsider the case in the future, it could limit or overturn Citizens United.
  • A change in the Court’s makeup—such as the appointment of justices who support stronger campaign finance laws—could increase the chances of a reversal.
  • Some legal scholars argue that future cases involving campaign finance could offer opportunities to narrow the ruling, particularly in areas of disclosure and coordination between campaigns and outside groups.
5. Grassroots and Advocacy Efforts
  • Organizations like End Citizens United, Move to Amend, and Common Cause continue to push for reforms.
  • Public pressure and awareness campaigns aim to build momentum for stricter campaign finance laws.
  • A growing number of Americans support stronger campaign finance laws. Polls show that a majority of voters across party lines favor limits on corporate spending in elections.
6. Future Strategies and Challenges
  • Continued pressure on Congress to pass disclosure and public financing laws.
  • More states passing campaign finance reforms as a model for national change.
  • Advocating for Supreme Court justices who prioritize campaign finance reform.
  • Using ballot initiatives to allow voters to weigh in directly on money in politics.
While overturning Citizens United remains a challenge, the combined efforts of legislation, judicial reconsideration, and grassroots activism continue to push for reform.
